Day 01: TV ON THE RADIO
Albums Listened to Beforehand: None
Albums Listened to: Young Liars EP, Dear Science
Thoughts: The very first song I listened to was Robots, which is a single from their concept album OK Calculator, and I thought it was a...very interesting way to start listening to this particular group. A very humorous, very catchy song. The band almost seems out of place, as if transported from a funky1970's and then moved into present times, forced to adapt to modern alternative sounds, and fused together. Staring at the Sun from Young Liars features a unison tenor melody against some electrified basslines and intense cymbal ticking. The final song on the album, Mister Grieves, has some magnificent a capella harmonies and is reminiscent of older times. Dear Science seems to take their sound to a new level: Dancing Choose makes a hybrid of electronica backgrounds and rap-like verses before merging into a simple melodic chorus, ("In my mind I'm drowning butterflies, broken dreams and alibies...that's fine.") while Family Tree vaguely recalls Coldplay's most recent sound, with orchestras wailing in front of a four-chord guitar/piano progression. Overall, I'm left with an overwhelming positive feeling from this group. They manage to have a unique sound and engrossing lyrics, creating a sound that feels almost sultry, and will stick with you long after you've stopped the music.
